Bluebox is going green
Bluebox is committed to achieving Net Zero by 2045, in line with the commitment of our home nation, Scotland.
Yes, that’s five years before the aviation sector’s Net Zero target of 2050, but Bluebox has always been a leader in our sector and that won’t stop now. Our climate – and our future – depends on everyone doing better than average.
The challenge is real.
Bluebox depends upon a thriving commercial aviation industry – airplanes flying and passengers travelling. But air travel is responsible for 2.5% of global CO2 emissions. Growth – more people travelling and more trade moving through the air – risks exacerbating the threats from climate change.
We all must do our part to reduce carbon emissions. So going beyond the aviation sector’s imperative of Net Zero by 2050, we have committed to achieving Net Zero by 2045.
How we will do this has not been left to a lot of blue sky thinking.
We have a plan.
Taking off.
Using a baseline of 2023, we approved our first Net Zero Strategy in 2024, starting with a detailed analysis of our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, and resulting in a carbon footprint of 147.59 tCO2e.
Though only required to report Scope 1 & 2 emissions, we recognise that we operate in an industry that is large a contributor of greenhouse gas emissions, so we wanted to lead by example and do more than the bare minimum.
We prioritised categories we considered would be the most significant contributors to our footprint: business travel, employee commuting and downstream transportation (shipping). As expected, our analysis showed that these emissions categories proved the most significant contributors to our carbon footprint – a total of more than 70%.
- Scope 1: Gas 5.8%
- Scope 2: Electricity 9.2%
- Scope 3: Air Travel 33%
- Scope 3: Employee Commuting 22.6%
- Scope 3: Shipped Goods 15.3%
Flying towards our target.
To ensure we make real progress towards the goal of Net Zero by 2045, we have also committed to an interim reduction target of 29% by 2030 and various initiatives to reduce emissions. Actions and options have been considered carefully and selected in order to reduce the company’s carbon impact, maximise resource efficiency, and yet still allow us to grow as a global business.
Some actions are quick wins, others require a more gradual approach given the scale of the change or resources required. Some are aimed at local impact, others more global. To the right are some that have already taken off, and are modelled to help achieve our interim target.
- Switch to green gas and renewable-sourced electricity
- Offset a proportion of air travel and shipping via bulk SAF purchase mechanisms
- Cease the use of data centres
Teamwork makes the dream work.
We know that to successfully achieve Net Zero certain fundamentals must be in place – a credible baseline and validated targets; an organisational framework that can support the financing, delivery and monitoring of emissions reductions; and the right policies, processes and people committed to the mission and focussed on reducing our carbon impact.
So we also have initiated several additional actions that may not reduce our emissions directly, but will help ensure we have the right crew doing the right things to ensure we do.
- Seek SBTi target validation
- Complete product carbon footprint audit
- Update environmental and travel policies
- Complete sustainability and green software training
- Engage a committed Green Team
Supporting our supply chain.
We understand we’re on this flightpath along with our customers, suppliers and partners, and that everyone needs to understand their impact on the climate and the actions required to protect it.
So we are also committed to assist with information and data needed to fulfil the Net Zero reporting requirements of businesses impacted by Bluebox’s role in their own supply chain. If you require this information for your own formal emissions reporting, please request support below.
