Taking flight with sustainability: How Bluebox plants a tree for every new client
As the aviation industry takes bold steps toward sustainability, the challenge lies not just in reducing emissions but also in giving back to the planet. At Bluebox Aviation, innovation isn’t just about delivering cutting-edge digital cabin solutions enabling in-flight entertainment (IFE) and increasing onboard revenue per seat, it is tackling this challenge head-on by partnering with The Great Reserve—an initiative to plant 100,000 giant sequoia trees across the UK. This partnership is part of Bluebox’s commitment to combining technological innovation with environmental responsibility.
Why giant sequoias?
Known for their impressive size and longevity, giant sequoias are natural carbon capture champions. According to The Great Reserve, a single mature sequoia can sequester over 100 tons of CO₂ within 150 years and far more throughout its lifetime. Planting these trees is a practical and impactful way to counterbalance carbon emissions—especially significant in an industry like aviation that contributes to global CO₂ levels.
“Giant sequoias are not just trees—they’re carbon sinks that can actively combat climate change. Our goal of planting 100,000 sequoias across the UK is ambitious, but with partners like Bluebox, it’s entirely achievable,” says Henry Emson, Founder of The Great Reserve.

A partnership with purpose
For every new client that partners with Bluebox, a giant sequoia tree is planted through The Great Reserve. This initiative aligns with Bluebox’s Net Zero commitment and reflects a broader industry trend of integrating sustainability into business practices.
Kevin Birchmore, EVP of Sales & Marketing at Bluebox Aviation, shares:
“Our partnership with The Great Reserve demonstrates our commitment to not only delivering cutting-edge IFE solutions but also contributing positively to the environment. Each new client doesn’t just mean growth for Bluebox—it means growth for the planet.”
How it works
- New client, new tree: For every new airline partner or customer, Bluebox plants a giant sequoia.
- Match funding programme: Clients can choose to fund additional trees and Bluebox (within limits) will match the commitment.
- Ongoing impact: As Bluebox continues to expand its client base, the number of trees planted will steadily grow—contributing to the long-term goal of 100,000 trees.
Caribbean Airlines: a recent success
Earlier this year, Bluebox celebrated its partnership with Caribbean Airlines by planting a giant sequoia in April 2025. This collaborative effort underscores how partnerships within the aviation sector can lead to meaningful environmental change.
“We’re proud to work with Caribbean Airlines on this project. It’s a testament to how our clients are not just adopting digital solutions but are also contributing to sustainability,” adds Birchmore.
The bigger picture: a greener aviation sector
Aviation companies worldwide are increasingly adopting long-term sustainable practices. British Airways, for example, has announced its own tree-planting initiatives with The Great Reserve. This is part of its commitment to reducing emissions. Source: British Airways Sustainability Programme.
Bluebox’s initiative stands out because it directly ties business growth to environmental action. Rather than just offsetting emissions, each new client represents a new tree planted—a symbol of commitment that goes beyond mere compliance.
Join the movement
By collaborating with The Great Reserve, Bluebox aims to inspire other tech and aviation companies to take concrete steps toward sustainability. Planting trees may seem like a small act, but when multiplied through industry-wide adoption, the positive effects can be profound.
“The aviation sector is often seen as a major contributor to climate change. But we can also be a part of the solution. Through initiatives like this, we’re showing that innovation and sustainability can coexist. I found the project a few years ago and have purchased my own tree, which I lovingly named Groot. As the tree may live for over a thousand years, it will absorb more carbon that I generate in my lifetime, and that simple message really resonated with me” says Birchmore.
At Bluebox, we believe that every client makes a difference. As we continue to innovate in the IFE and digital cabin space, we’re equally committed to leaving a positive mark on the environment. If you’re a client, potential partner, or just curious to know more about our sustainability initiatives, reach out to us. Let’s grow together—one tree at a time.
